Remembering Nicole

A couple good days and we are moving right along. Seventeen miles yesterday and 18 today. We are both quite sore: Tortuga’s knees and my feet and hips. But we will be out there again tomorrow!

They say hiking the AT is about the people you meet. Yesterday I met someone I will never forget. Mardy is not hiking the trail, she was camped by herself next to us and came over a few times needing to talk to someone. We were happy for the company and she eventually got around to sharing why she was here. Her daughter passed away in the park exactly one year ago just a few miles from our campground in the shadow of Rag Mountain. You may remember the story in the news about Nicole Mittendorff. The firefighter/EMT, missing person, manhunt, etc., made national headlines for weeks. Truly a sad and tragic tale. They say that losing a child is the worst and Mardy lost hers in the hardest way imaginable. Her grief is overwhelming. Please say a prayer for Nicole, Mardy, and the rest of the family. I hope they all find a bit of peace.

  1. I am so very sad to hear of this mom’s loss and grief. I hope her being able to speak with you is a bit cathartic for her. Sometimes just having someone listen is what you want and need. The fact that you were there by her is Divine intervention.
